Different forms.
The same curiosity.
I’m Mathew. I build with AI, make music,
shape sound, and work with images.

A practice built across disciplines.
Mathew Harwich is a creative technologist, composer, trumpet performer and teacher, audio and video producer, and photographer based in Upland, California. His work moves between the artistic idea and the technical detail: the shape of a musical phrase, the timing of an edit, the clarity of an interface, or the moment a photograph holds. Each discipline offers a different way to make something thoughtful and useful.
Designing and building with AI.
AI-assisted development is central to Mathew’s current practice. He designs and builds websites, native Mac applications, and digital workflows, using AI to explore ideas, work through technical problems, and refine functioning products. His work includes One Big Note, a focused macOS app released on the Mac App Store, and Behalf, a tool he built to organize career information. He approaches these projects through repeated use and revision, with attention to both what a tool does and how it feels to use.
A musician’s foundation.
Mathew earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the California Institute of the Arts in 2011, studying performance and composition in the Performer-Composer program with Edward Carroll and Barry Schrader. His trumpet work spans orchestral, chamber, solo, live, and studio settings. He has served as principal trumpet with the Pasadena Community Orchestra and Southland Wind Ensemble, performed with Millennial Choirs & Orchestras, and appeared at Coachella as a guest artist with Lemaitre in 2016.
As a composer, he scored Dave Aldrich’s Dreaming Awake trailer and films, including Fort Funston, Wallaby Ranch, and Building Dreams. Dreaming Awake at Fort Funston won First Place at the 6th NorCal Free Flight Film Festival in 2016.
Teaching is another part of that musical life. His experience includes private and online trumpet instruction, trumpet teaching at Orion International Academy beginning in January 2026, and directing the academy’s summer band program that year.
Shaping what we hear and see.
In production, Mathew brings a performer’s understanding of balance and timing to recording and editing. His work includes concert audio and video for LA Winds and professional audio recordings for the Pasadena Community Orchestra. He created and produced SCSBOA’s 2021 virtual honor ensemble concerts for elementary, middle, and high school musicians, bringing separate performances together through detailed audio processing and video assembly.
His photography encompasses performance, portraits, families, groups, and promotional work. He has served for years as the exclusive photographer for Irish Dimensions Dance Company. Through MPH Photo, he also shares his attention to places, light, and the natural world.
The connection is curiosity.
Across these fields, Mathew keeps returning to the relationship between intention and craft. Music informs his production work; teaching asks him to communicate clearly; photography sharpens observation; and software offers new ways to address practical creative problems. AI extends what he can explore and build, while the work remains guided by listening, looking closely, and making considered decisions.
A practice, in progress.
